Faith
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. - Hebrews 11:1
We use the word “faith” quite often in the church community. I’m not sure we always have a well rounded understanding of what “faith” means. Faith is the cornerstone of our belief. Understanding “faith” is of the utmost significance in following Jesus and being transformed.
The author of Hebrews focuses on the faith. Because of Jesus, the people no longer need to do “works” to be in God’s good graces. Their righteousness was established on the cross and through Jesus’⅞ victory over death forever. Gone is the guilt of our actions and for we have been washed clean. This cleansing only made possible because of faith.
In 2 Corinthians 5:7, Paul says it simply, “For we live by faith, not by sight.” There is a certainty in faith. While we did not see Jesus nailed to the cross, we are certain it happened. While we did not talk to the angel, like Mary, or run to the empty tomb, like Peter, we are convinced they are true. These things that we have not seen with our own eyes, we can believe because of faith.
I am looking forward to experiencing the growth of faith in our community of believers over the next few months. This week, many will investigate their spiritual gifts and explore creating a deeper relationship with Christ. Next week the monthly study, Basics of Faith begins, and we will explore “Who is Jesus” in the first session. As we build a better foundation, there is no doubt the Lord will grow us in the certainty of our faith.
Be blessed and be a blessing,
Matt
